Gear train and time setting

Description

This masterclass is designed as the natural next step after Masterclass 101: Introduction to Watchmaking. It combines two essential areas of mechanical watchmaking, gear trains and winding/setting works, into a cohesive learning experience.

Participants will first explore the gear train, the intricate system that drives the accuracy of a watch. Through clear explanations and hands-on practice, they will see how ratios, tooth profiles, and mechanical theory translate into the beat rate and precision of a timepiece.

The session then moves into the winding and setting works, the mechanisms that allow a watch to be powered, adjusted, and controlled. Students will work directly on these systems, gaining practical insight into how they interact with the gear train and ensure the watch remains both functional and user-friendly.

By the end of the class, participants will have a deeper understanding of how a mechanical watch not only keeps time but also allows the wearer to engage with it. This intermediary level builds confidence and skill, preparing students for more advanced explorations into complications and fine horology.
