Description
The King Midas line was introduced in the 1960s, designed by the legendary Gérald Genta, who later created icons like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus. Inspired by the mythological king whose touch turned everything to gold, the series was produced in very limited numbers, making each reference highly collectible. The Ref. 4017 appeared in the early 1970s as part of this family, distinguished by its asymmetrical case architecture and precious metal execution—available in yellow and white gold. Unlike Rolex’s tool watches, the King Midas was positioned as avant-garde luxury, emphasizing bold design and exclusivity. Today, the 4017 is celebrated as a cult classic within the Cellini collection, prized for its rarity, mythological inspiration, and Genta’s design pedigree.
